Practical Info

This is a trip for all those who are interested in photography, or nature. Or both! Sailing-wise the trip is not very difficult, but you have to be prepared for both beautiful, and harsh conditions. If you’re a rookie, we wish to make you a sailor as soon as possible, and if you’re experienced, you’ll be given responsibility and experience greater challenges. This is a photo-trip, and we’ll be spending a lot of time behind the camera. You don’t have to have special knowledge with photography, we’ll adjust the level accordingly to the participants, and you’ll quickly be given new tasks and learn plenty underway.

WEEK 1: 07 – 13 Jan

WEEK 2: 14 – 20 Jan

We hoist sail in Bodø and spend one week northwards to Tromsø. We’ll explore Steigen, Lofoten, Andøya and Senja.

Underway we will search for wildlife, orcas, whales and northern light, and learn more about sailing and photography.

Onboard on this trip, we have with us adventure photographer Mats Grimsæth! He’ll share his knowledge and experience about photography.

On this trip, you do not need previous training or skills with photography, and if you do not want to take pictures, and just want to join an unforgettable winter-sailing adventure, you are also welcome onboard!

Day 1 – Arrival and sail to Karlsøy

Welcome aboard! We meet on the docks in Bodø at 1500 o’clock, get settled in the sailboat and start getting to know the other participants. Before we hoist sail we’ll become familiar with the boat, the equipment and safety routines onboard. When ready, we set course northwards heading for a group of islands in Steigen where we find a sheltered natural bay, the distance about 16 nautical miles. Underway we learn handling the sails, and how to handle a “man over board” and other emergency situations. -/-/D

Day 2 – Sail towards Steigen and over the Vestfjord to Lofoten

After breakfast we sail the remaining short distance to Nordskot, Steigen. Here the two norwegian polar explorers, Børge Ousland and Randi Skaug, have bought each their little island, and inside the main house at Børge’s camp we’ll take the first part of the photocourse. In the afternoon we sail over to Lofoten, crossing the Vestfjord in the winter-night. B/L/D

Day 3 – Full day of sailing up to Andøya and Risøyhamn

If the conditions are right, we wake up this morning in the magical Trollfjord, with it’s high ranging mountains and peaks. Who is taking the first morning bath? For the rest of the day we sail northwards, the distance about 50 nm. Underway we get to practice more both photo and sailing. B/L/D

Day 4 – Going to Hamn on Senja – meeting the whales

After breakfast we set sail north towards Senja, and here you really should have all your batteries fully charged. Now we approach the area where we normally see a lot of whales this time of year. This will be another full day sailing, and as we reach Hamn, we are awaited by a hot bathtub and sauna. This night we eat in the restaurant of Hamn. B/L/-

Day 5 – Close on the whales in the fjords of Senja

Now it starts! After breakfast we sail out of the sheltered bay of Hamn and spend time in the area where a lot of whales have been observed the last years. So now it’s just to about preparing the good tele-lenses and make room on the memory cards. We then continue sailing northwards aiming for Sommarøy (Summer-island!), where we anchor for the night. Maybe this night will be the perfect night for a bonfire on the beach under the Northern Lights .B/L/D

Day 6 – Whale-safari on the outer side of Kvaløya

We continue our sail from Sommarøy north on the outside of Kvaløya – in order to see more whales and orcas. We sail now in the same waters as millions of tonnes of herring, and here has been very high activity by whales and orcas the last years. We keep a sharp lookout and hope to meet the whales again here. B/L/D

Day 7 – Last encounters with the whales and afternoon sail into Tromsø

This morning we sail into another fjord where the whale activity use to be very high. Then we set sail for Tromsø to finish of the trip. This night we eat dinner in a good restaurant and then go dancing! (for those who do not need to rush home immedeately). B/L/-
