Ski & Sail, Lofoten, Norway

Join: Svolvær

Leave: Svolvær

This ski & sail trip is for you if you like the idea of alpine skiing and randonné in the untouched Lofoten mountains of northern Norway. The trip is for travellers wanting a more challenging holiday – for those of you who want to experience something unique, wild, breathtaking and beautiful – no matter whether you are experienced or a beginner, you will be very welcome on this ski & sail adventure.

The trip begins with an optional two-day avalanche course.

On this trip, we travel with a UIAGM-certified ski guide on board for a minimum of 4 of the days. The guide is included as a resource and mentor and also gives us opportunities to do more demanding skiing for those who want to.

Day-to-day expedition program

Avalanche course (optional):

Sunday, arrive in Lofoten during the day

Monday – Avalanche course day 1.

Theory in the morning, practice in the mountains after lunch.

Tuesday – Avalanche course day 2.

A little theory in the morning then more practice out in the mountains.

Ski & Sail trip:

Start: Svolvær

End: Svolvær

Tuesday evening – day of arrival for the Ski & Sail part of the trip

The group gathers, get to know the other participants and make a plan for the week ahead based on forecasted weather and snow. Go through basic sailing and boat handling in preparation for the week ahead.

Wednesday – sailing and provisioning in Svolvær

We get to know the boats and the equipment and sail towards Solver for a short walk in town and the last preparations. Depending on conditions, the first mountain will either be Blåtind right at Svolvaer, or we sail into the fjord.

Thursday – skiing

Early morning we head north into the Austnesfjord with its varied terrain and possibilities for fun under different conditions. Here we find both easy and more challenging ski routes, the most difficult and well-known being Geitgaljen and Higravtindene. In the evening we sail towards Trollfjorden, where we spend the night.

Friday – summit and skiing in Trollheimen

The day begins in the magnificent Trollfjorden, a bay only accessible by boat. If the conditions allow we head upwards early before the sun starts warming up the mountains, aiming for peaks of 1,000 metres. Back in the boat we prepare dinner.

Saturday – skiing day two in Trollheimen

Today is also spent in the mountains of the Trollheimen area. Before the sun has become too hot, we will be on shore with skis on, ascending to the 1,000-metre-high peaks. After skiing we sail out of Trollfjorden and further north into Raftsundet.

Sunday – skiing

Today you will stay in Raftsundet, where there are varied opportunities for great skiing, not to mention the amazing views of Lofoten!

Monday – sailing

After days of great skiing you will be ready to sail as we travel through Vesterålen and northward around Hinnøya. On the way we pass Møysalen, Stokmarknes, Sortland and many other great places. The aim of the day is to get as close as possible Svolvaer for departure / hike the next day.

Tuesday – skiing and repatriation

Today we aim to ski at a peak close to Svolvær, then we call it a wrap!

Book flights leaving Svolvær no earlier than 1800 in the evening.

This programme should be viewed as a starting point, which will be adapted for weather and snow conditions as well as guests’ wishes. If we end up somewhere without snow we simply sail to a place where there is. Aboard the yachts we have dinghies and kayaks to go ashore and for small expeditions. There is fishing gear to catch supper and camping and hiking equipment for campfires on the summits. Everything is set for an unforgettable ski & sail expedition!
