Sail to Traena Music Festival
Join: Brønnøysund, TBC June, afternoon.
Leave: Træna Island, TBC, morning.
We recommend guests arrive at Brønnøysund on Friday afternoon. We will spend the evening getting to know the boats and the other guests. We’ll make dinner on board and sleep in Brønnøysund that evening.
In the morning we will go through a rough plan for the week. Before we set sail, a basic theory course on sailing and safety will be given before we set head for Hildurs Urterarium, the only herb and vinyard in Northern Norway. Here we’ll be served their herb pizza or Bacalao (salt cod). In the afternoon we set sail again towards the BlueSky island Ylvingen, for a welcome party and barbecue on the dock.
You can choose between hiking on Ylvingen island, kayaking or small-boat sailing in classical Nordland boats. Another option is to go out with one of the local fishermen to catch fish. For lunch we will cook fresh fish. After lunch an easy afternoon or more activities, before we set sail for Nes, Vega, which is the entering port of the World Heritage Area of the Vega Islands. Dinner on board. (At Nes you can stay at Vega Ocean Hotel, for those not on a budget).
In the morning you can start the day visiting the eider bird museum for a guided talk on the art of eider bird farming and the World Heritage area of the Vega Islands with its traditions of sustainable living and hunting in rough surroundings. After lunch at Vega Ocean Hotel (or on the boat), we head for Hysvær amongst the outer islands. Some of us will go by kayaks, some under sail.
At Hysvær we fish for our own dinner and spend the evening on board. Depending on the weather we may venture out to the islands of Skjærvær, the most far out islands before Iceland.
A full day of sailing heading for the Seven Sisters mountains (de syv søstre). On the way a short stop at Lånan for lunch. In the evening we moor in the harbour of Søvikvågen and prepare ourselves for a hike to the tops of the Seven Sisters early next morning.
Hike to the top of the Seven Sisters. Early, we head up to Stortinden which stands 1,050 metres above sea level, where we eat lunch with superb views overlooking the kingdom of isles. Some may proceed to the second top, Kvasstinden, while the most adventurous will hike all the seven tops to Botnkrona in the north. In the afternoon we set sail northwards heading for Sandnessjøen, preparing for the Træna Ocean Race which starts the next morning.
Race day. The Træna Ocean Race goes the 40 nautical miles from Sandnessjøen to Træna for the music festival. Here we are talking teamwork and racing all day, arriving at Træna in the evening. There is no better way to arrive at or start a festival than by way of a sailing race – in the same spirit as the Vikings entered harbours in the old days.
Music and festival life at Træna. Before the concerts start at six pm there will be possibilities for sailing around the islands, fishing, eagle-safari or kayaking. Or you can just enjoy the festival, eat food and drink beer!
Festival with a boat-trip to Senna (the next door island) for the yearly concert in Kirkehelleren cave. In the afternoon we serve the Captains Tuna on Sail, and hold the awards ceremony.
End of the festival. Clean-out of the boats and preparations for new friends and sailors coming on-board. Those who end their trip here return to the mainland by ferry, fishing-vessels, taxi-boat; to Sandnessjøen, Bodø or Nesna. Space on public transport is best booked in advance – we can help out arranging this.
This is a rough outline programme as an ambition for the week. As we sail along we will adapt to weather conditions and there might be changes in the programme. The aim however remains the same: to have the most amazing week possible!
