This is the trip for those who have high expectations for holidays, both in terms of nature experiences and food. On this trip, we combine wild nature with unique dining experiences. Both the daytime out skiing and the evenings in the boat are highlights. The northern lights dance above us, while you are being served one culinary meal after another. Are you ready for an adventure in the north?

Don’t just experience Lofoten, taste it too! We bring a skilled chef on board and offer unique meals, sometimes with a “local” twist to it.

Ski & Sail is an adventure for those of you who like the idea of alpine skiing and randonné in the untouched Lofoten-mountains of northern Norway. It is a trip for travellers wanting a more challenging holiday – for you who would like to experience something unique, wild, breathtaking and beautiful – no matter if you are experienced or a beginner we welcome you to our Ski & Sail adventure.

The Lofoten isles make out some of the rawest nature Norway has to offer. The area is famous for its alpine mountains and peaks, there are great numbers of natural pistes, offering possibilities and options for a wide range of skiers. Most of the trips offer 700 – 1000 meters of altitude and descents, and the skiing most often ends down on the beach. Many of the most spectacular places are available by boat only. That is why we sail.

During this week we will explore and reach many of the most beautiful mountains in Lofoten, and in between, we will get much nice sailing on our way from the one place to the other.

If these dates don’t work, why not book the whole boat for dates that do. Minimum 5 participants.

Day 1 – Meeting on the dock in Svolvær

We meet in the harbour by the restaurant “Bacalao” at 18:00 and get settled into the boat and get to know each other. Before we set sails, we will walk you through safety routines while onboard, and get familiar with the boat. Before it is too late in the evening we cast off towards a natural harbour where we spend the night at anchor. We eat supper on our way, but probably quite late, so we recommend you to eat dinner before meeting, if possible. The sooner we start sailing this evening, the sooner we get to the fjords, ready for skiing the next morning.

Day 2 – Austnesfjorden

After early breakfast, we go ashore with the dinghy. Together with the ski guide, we will make a final decision on where to ski depending on weather, snow conditions and wind. There are many opportunities in Austnesfjorden, such as Higravtindan and Geitgaljertind, which are also the most known and demanding summits. This being our first day of skiing we start off more easily. In the afternoon we have no need to sail far as this fjord has ample possibilities and many very nice phases and peaks.

Day 3 – Austnesfjorden

We stay in the Austnesfjord with its varied terrain and possibilities for fun under different conditions. Here we find both easy and more challenging routes, and if the weather gods are on our side we might try to ascend Geitgaljen, one of the most spectacular summits in Lofoten! If the snow conditions are good, this hill offers a magical descend all the way to shore. In the evening we relax for a while and sail out the fjord towards Trollfjorden were we will spend the evening.

Day 4 – Majestic and “trollish” Trollheimen

This morning we start in the magnificent Trollfjorden, a bay available to sailors and boaters only. (We promise you will get in Easter-mode). If the conditions allow we head upwards early before the sun starts warming up the hills, reaching for peaks of 1000 meters. Back in the boat, we will prepare a special meal this Good Friday.

Day 5 – Skiing in Trollheimen or Raftsundet

This day the program will depend on the conditions. One possibility is to go way up high, but we can also go more safely in the forests. There are so many places to go!:)

Day 6 – Skiing in the mountainsides of Raftsundet

This day we stay in Raftsundet with the areas various opportunities and great skiing. Not to mention the view towards the most amazing Lofoten skylight! Last night often means good fun onboard the boat.

Day 7 – Early morning skiing and sailing back

Early skiing this last day at a peak close to Svolvær, then at 16:00 we dock and call it a wrap! The bus and speed ferry depart by the harbour, and distance to the airport is not far, but please add some wiggle room when booking your return transport.

The program

The program may change according to weather and conditions, but it gives an indication of how we spend the days. We start every day with a good breakfast and make a packed lunch before we go ashore. Some of the days we eat dinner right away after skiing, other days we just eat a little when we come back to the boat, and then sail on before we make a later dinner. Some days, we spend time fishing, and time to look around. If the weather should be really not in favour of skiing, then we spend the day sailing or do something else fun.

What is really Ski & Sail?

It’s a concept where we use our sailboats as a floating chalet; we sail to the foot of the mountains and start our skiing right on the beach. By boat, we are flexible, mobile and can move from place to place, and choose hillsides, faces and our areas according to the present conditions we have. Ski & Sail is a concept done by Italian and French alpinists since early 1990’s, and a concept that Norwegians recently have started to appreciate.

Experience level on this trip – medium

This trip takes some experience from randonee / skiing but you do not need to be advanced. If you do have a lot of experience it is only positive, and you will be able to challenge yourself. Those with more experience often want to run steeper, and may even do multiple runs in one day. As organisers, we try to keep the level as equal as we can, so that we can choose mountains according to the level of the group. If you are in doubt this is the right trip for you, you are welcome to contact us at any time – even you are a beginner or experienced.
This is a sailing trip possible to do for most travellers! Sailing-wise the trip is not particularly difficult, but you must be prepared for sailing in rough weather. If you are a beginner, we want to turn you into a sailor as quickly as possible, and if you’re experienced you’ll get challenges and respond accordingly.

Travel

Check sas.no or wideoe.no for flights to Svolvær. If you get to Bodø you may take the ferry or fast ferry over to Lofoten. See the public itinerary here: www.177nordland.no. You may also perfectly well take the train to Bodø. Travelling slowly gives another dimension to a journey than flying. If you’re travelling from a city in the north or wish to extend your journey with a day or two, you can consider doing so on Hurtigruten.

Changes in the program

You may see the program as a plan that we adjust according to weather and conditions. If we’re in a place without snow, we set sail to where there is more snow! With the sailboat, we are flexible so we can find the best snow. Onboard we have with us a dinghy for trips ashore, we have fishing gear for the cod, and we have what we need to make a bonfire and have fun ashore. We are ready for an adventure. Are you?

Take an internal flight to Svolvær.
