Sail from Cascais, Lisbon aboard a luxury 57’ yacht. The first passage of 480NM which will take around 5 days leaves mainland Europe behind and heads west to the Island of Madeira. Once there you explore the area with what time allows before turning south on a 2/day 285NM leg to our destination of Gran Canaria.
8 nights: 16 - 26 September 2023
From £2,764.00 per person
This trip is suitable for all, but perhaps especially for those either wanting to log sea miles towards a Yachtmaster qualification or enhance their seamanship skills and knowledge. With a Yachtmaster Instructor of both Theory and Practical on board to guide you and a yacht equipped with the latest navigation, communication and safety systems required for a cruise round the world then this is an opportunity rarely afforded. Learn the amazing capabilities that technology has to offer but while it has its place you are shown, if you wish, the more traditional methods of using a sextant, a Walker log and paper charts to navigate.

Heading west to Madeira for 480NM we will see both dolphin and porpoise who either speed beside us or cross our bow racing along in their numbers with effortless ease. For anyone wanting to take sun sights this is an ideal opportunity as the days are still long. With a rotating watch system, you will experience the quiet of a night and the beauty of a sunrise and the smell of the homemade bread that comes out of the oven in the mornings. You will be involved in everything that makes a long passage a great experience. You may even be sad to see land!
Our first port of call in Madeira is at Marina Porto Santo. You may want to wander into the main town of Vila Baleira with its cobbled square, cafes and 15th-century church or you may simply want to relax on a beach. The choice is yours.
We leave this northern isle and sail south to the main island that is Madeira. We will drop anchor at the foot of Cabo Girao – Europe’s 7th highest sea cliff rising to an impressive 589M. Snorkel in the crisp clear waters around us or take the dingy ashore to sample the local restaurant.
Our last long passage. The weather is getting warmer and the two day sail will go past in a flash. Just over half way we will pass to port the uninhabited Selvagem Islands. This small archipelago surrounded by reefs is a designated nature and marine reserve being both an important nesting point for several species of bird and home to five of the eight species of sea turtle in the world.
Depart yacht at 10am.
is a 2007 Oyster 56 A luxury 57ft sailing yacht designed by Rob Humphries. The 56 is perhaps the quintessential Oyster design and was the undisputed class leader at this size for more than a decade.
The key to her success is her size; large enough for rapid ocean cruising and to accommodate her crew and guests in comfort and style when living aboard, but easy to handle.
A spacious deck layout, large secure cockpit area and wide side decks make for comfortable and safe cruising and there are plenty of places to relax on deck.
The interior arrangement provides 3 separate cabins for guests. There is one double cabin, and two twin cabins, one forward and one aft. There is a day head midships for use by all guests and the large bright saloon offers plenty of room for relaxing in comfort. All creature comforts can be found on board: heating, air conditioning and fully covered cockpit if it is cold. The guests separate shower stall and quiet flush electric toilet makes it feel a little more like home.
The Oyster 56 is a proven performer, with many ocean crossings and circumnavigations to her credit. She has had class wins in the ARC and has also won Cruising Class 1 at Antigua Sailing Week, beating several more serious racing yachts. She is a superb sea boat and remains very well regarded by all her fortunate owners.
