Join us on an epic blast across the Atlantic on a top-performance yacht. The Cape2Rio Race attracts top yachts from around the world to race across the Atlantic.

You’ll participate in all aspects of the crew on the Volvo 70 Green Dragon while taking part in this challenging transatlantic race. This yacht, which is named after a legendary creature in Irish mythology, has competed in some of the most prestigious races in the world – even claiming 1st line honours for a monohull in the 2021 Transatlantic Race. Do you think she has it in her for another line honour title in the Cape2Rio race?

On this high-calibre Cape2Rio race, from Cape Town to Rio, you'll navigate through the trade winds and possibly encounter the Gulf Stream – a powerful ocean current that could influence your sailing route strategy.

From December 23rd to the 26th, we will commence with intensive training sessions to ensure you are fully prepared for the journey ahead, and on December 27th the race begins! You will be on board for 10 to 13 days partaking in the prestigious Transatlantic Race, which promises to be not just a race against the wind, but a bucket list adventure that will leave you with plenty of stories to tell.

Training – 23 – 24 December 2025

Join Volvo 70 Green Dragon on the 23rd of December for the start of training. However, if you have work or family commitments, you can join on the 24th if you would like. From the 23rd to the 25th, you will be doing on-the-water training and boat familiarisation, along with crew safety. On the 26th of December, you will be helping prepare the boat with provisions and organizing the boat before the start on the 27th.

The prestigious Transatlantic Race starts in Table Bay, Cape Town, and finishes in Guanabara Bay, Rio. It attracts the top race yachts worldwide to race after a busy European season over the Atlantic to kick-start the competitive Caribbean season.

The race takes you across 3,300 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. As the race starts in January it takes advantage of the most consistent trade winds giving competitors optimum and exciting downwind sailing.

Volvo 70: Green Dragon

Technical Info

The underwater ship was stripped down to its original hull filler in 2016 and rebuilt using Veneziani’s Speedy Carbonium. In 2018, she was repainted, had new hydro turf installed in the cockpit, and had a new mast installed. A new vinyl wrap was applied to her in 2019.

Race History

The team was captained by Ian Walker and finished the race in fifth place overall, scoring 63 points. The boat was designed by Reichel Pugh and built by McConaghy Boats.

The 2008–09 Volvo Ocean Race was a yacht race held between 4 October 2008 and 27 June 2009—the 10th edition of the round the world Volvo Ocean Race.
