Get on the water with the Austrian Ocean Race Project - powered by Team Genova - at the Ocean Race stopover in Aarhus, Denmark.
Aarhus, Denmark Ocean Race stopover: 04 - 08 June 2023
Join in some VO65 in-port pro/am racing, spectate the start of the leg from the Austrian Team's chase boat or be that one lucky person to jump off the back of a VO65 after the start of this Ocean Race leg.
You can’t get any closer to the action in Aarhus than with an inshore guest experience. Enjoy the thrill of sailing a VO65 shoulder-to-shoulder with the Austrian Ocean Race Project team as you race against other Ocean Race teams. Want to spectate? We also have limited spaces on the team’s high-speed chase boat for both all in-port races as well as the Ocean Race leg start. And for that one lucky daredevil, we’re offering the unique honour of being on board the VO65 for the start of the race leg, before jumping off to be picked up by the chase boat!
Be onboard the Austrian Ocean Race Project’s VO65 for the In-Port Race. This is a professional race where valuable Ocean Race series points are at stake for the overall ranking, and as a visitor, you are right in the middle of it. You can feel the tension at the start, where every centimetre counts, and you can celebrate with the team at the finish line or experience the disappointment up close. This is a professional race, so the guest crew can only spectate from onboard the yacht during the race itself.
The Pro-Am Sailing are short inshore sailing sessions offering guests the opportunity to take part in sailing the VO65s or the IMOCAs alongside the sailors. A number of these sailing sessions take place at every stopover. You’ll be hosted in the Sailors Terrace; after a short presentation about the Ocean Race, it’s time to jump aboard for a quick safety brief and training. On the water, you’ll take part in the Speed Run Duel, an exhilarating head-to-head race against another of the elite teams participating in The Ocean Race. Joining the Crew with other guests, you’ll be at the heart of the action, getting hands-on and experiencing the excitement and challenges that come with being part of a racing team. After the race, it’s back to the Sailors Terrace for drinks and prizegiving. There are two sessions each day (morning and afternoon).
For the really daring, there is the truly unique option to be onboard at the start of this Ocean Race leg from Aarhus to The Hague. Feel the tension onboard as the sailors start this ever-important point-winning leg through Europe. But now we come to the daredevil part, where the leg jumper has to jump overboard at full speed into the cold water. A RIB will be on standby to pick you up and ferry you back to shore.
Enjoy VIP hospitality on the sailor’s terrace and a front-row seat of In-port racing, Pro/Am Races and the Leg Start from the Austrian Ocean Race Project’s very own chase boat.
It’s important to understand that on racing boats, performance comes first, not comfort. You should be physically prepared to climb onto the boat and find your balance in high-speed sailing conditions. Once onboard the racing boat, you will remain aboard the boat until the race has finished (unless you’re on the leg jumper!). You will need previous sailing experience to compete in Pro/Am races.
Our team of sailing specialists are on hand to help answer any questions you may have.

Since 1973, the Ocean Race has been the ultimate test of a sports team and a human adventure like no other. Over four decades, it has had an almost mythical appeal to some of the greatest sailors and has been the touchstone for the legends of our sport.
The Austrian Ocean Race Project is the first team from Austria to participate in the Ocean Race. A young team of passionate sailors from all over the world. As Austrians, far from the rough seas, the team is new to that challenge. The team proved their pedigree by topping the podium in the opening stage of the Ocean Race Europe, beating many sailing legends and veterans. Their initial success has been followed by a run of top results in offshore regattas across Europe. You can feel this energy immediately when you step on the boat. Full commitment, all the time.
Drawn at Farr Yacht Design in the USA, especially for the Volvo Ocean Race 2014/15 (now the Ocean Race), the strict one-design Vo65 replaced its predecessor, the Vo70. Every Vo65 is structurally identical down to the smallest detail. Same hull, same rig, same sails, same opportunities. This produced some of the closest racing the Ocean Race has ever seen.
As with its predecessor, the basic concept is a planing hull with a wide stern, double rudders, sharp edges and a swivel keel. The reverse bow is new. It extends the waterline and reduces the pounding in short waves, but provides plenty of spray on deck. The lateral plan has also been revised. The Vo65 dispenses with an angle of attack of the swords and instead relies on a lift profile to counteract the drift.
The rig is made by the New Zealand manufacturer Southern Spars. Southern Spars has a closely related history with The Ocean Race. They have been equipping the most successful teams for 25 years and were pioneers with the carbon mast in the 90s.
The entire set of sails is produced by North Sails. The 3Di technology patented by North Sails is also used in the Vo65. The sails are made from RAW760 Ultra PE / Aramid.
