ARC 2022

The iconic Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) starts in Gran Canaria and finishes in TBC. In November, around 270 yachts will set sail from Las Palmas in Gran Canaria to participate in the world-renowned ARC.

The ARC takes you across 2,700 miles of the Atlantic Ocean on the trade wind route intended to give optimum exciting downwind sailing. It is one of the most civilised yet exciting ways of crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

It is an aspiration of most sailors – leaving the winter weather behind them in the UK to sail non-stop through the Caribbean. It is sure to be a very memorable moment in your life!

Baltic 58

The ultimate proof of Finnish craftsmanship and style, a true bluewater cruiser, the well-proven Baltic 58. With the generous and beautiful wooden interior, she offers a graceful feeling of warmth. Her sailing abilities is a treat for yachting aficionados, a fantastic experience for anyone interested in sailing. Safety is always paramount. We are carrying all safety equipment required for an ocean-going vessel, the boat is one of the safest series produced boats ever built.

– All personal safety gear
– Full board during the crossing
– Events housed by the ARC organization included in the boat participation fee

Not included are the flights + other transportation to and from the destination, personal insurance and what each spends ashore.

Cruising or Racing

This is our first ARC with Ice Bear (Baltic 58) but previous ARC crossings have taught us a lesson or two. We are going to be 9 persons on the boat (crew + skipper, mate and chef) and our aim in the race will be discussed and established among the crew prior to starting. At the moment we are announced in the cruising division, which we think is clever since you can motor out of a situation with long calms without abandoning the race. We can always switch over to the racing division, in case the crew have the appetite for it. This decision must be made before the start. We have previously done two racing and two cruising division.

Crew Competence

This one correlates with the previous. Our setup in the race will be decided by the level of competence and skills on the boat as well as the ability of the skipper and mate to forge a functioning racing crew. We have no actual formal requirements for people attending but we expect you to have been on a boat before and carry some basic sailing skills. The one thing to look out for is your possible leaning towards motion sickness, or seasickness, as we call it. If you already have racing experience, we can easily allow you more responsibility and find tasks that suit your level of knowledge and skills.

Boat Setup

The setup on the boat is a normal crew situation where all will be involved in the running of the boat. This concerns all aspects and we will also give people special tasks depending on their appetite for learning or based on their experience. Such roles could be navigator and weather analyst, radio and communication or maybe watch leader. We can also rotate roles if there is a wish for it. Safety is always paramount and non-negotiable. We are carrying all safety equipment required for an oceangoing vessel and the boat, a robust Baltic 58, is one of the best series-produced boats ever built.

Provisioning

Provisioning is done on the spot and everyone has a saying on the content. Our aim is to have ambitions high enough to keep everyone going and happy. We usually house several different nationalities and it usually contributes for quite a mix of different dishes. Provisioning is orchestrated by the Chef.

Skipper & Mate

The skipper and the mate are both experienced sailors carrying the necessary tickets. The skipper has done eleven previous ocean crossings including five ARC races prior to this. The mate has sailed on the Atlantic and several racing events and is considered a very reliable and competent person.

Time Schedule

The race is still to be announced but usually, the start is the last Sunday of November from Las Palmas De Gran Canaria. The boat will be placed in Marina Muelle Deportivo marina a week before the start. You are welcome to drop in when you want. The idea is to give everyone a possibility to suck up all the interesting pre-race vibes and maybe attend some of the courses arranged by the ARC officials. We are also happy to receive some help during provisioning and of course, it would be beneficiary for the crew to get to know the boat as well as each other before the race. The same concerns on arrival to St Lucia. We cannot give an exact date for arrival but our previous crossings have lasted between 15 and 20 days and we are expecting this one to fall somewhere in that bracket as well. You are free to stay or use the boat as base four days after arrival.

Flights

Due to the uncertainty on the arrival date, we recommend booking flights through Marine Travel which can change your flights whilst on the crossing if you’re going to be late. Click here to view their website.
