Terceira is one of the main islands, it is also the location of the Azores’ oldest city Angra do Heroismo, a World Heritage Site. This island is perfect for history buffs and cultural aficionados. It also offers the unique chance to explore inside an extinct volcano, the Algar do Carvão. Visit the Ponta das Contendas Lighthouse established in 1934, the isolated views are incredible and overlook rocky cliffs to the vast Atlantic ocean. Stretch your legs and hike the Monte Brasil peninsula, covered in a thick forest full of flowers in spring.

Horta

Famous with sailors, Horta marina is located on the island of Faial. Stroll through the marina, and you will be enchanted by countless paintings done by yacht crews marking the historical nautical landmark of the first landfall. Stop in at Peter’s Café Sports, a rite of passage for any sailor anchoring at Horta. This quaint family-owned bar was established in 1918. It has stood the test of time and is still a regular haunt for thirsty sailors. Take a gander at the scrimshaw museum, a collection of engravings done by whalers.

Flores island is utterly captivating, with its lakes, sea cliffs, laurel forests and waterfalls.
