Martinique

Cabin | Bareboat | Skippered | Crewed
A hidden gem amongst the Caribbean shores, Martinique is part of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. Only 80 km in length, the island was formed by volcanic activity which has created one-of-a-kind landscapes, including black sand beaches and tropical rainforests. A cultural melting pot that seamlessly blends French culture with local island charm. With most of the island protected by the Regional Nature Park, Martinique has exceptional biodiversity and extraordinary unspoilt landscapes that hikers love

Regions

The Cruising Ground

Le Marin

Located on the south coast of Martinique lies Le Marin. Walk along the marina and visit its little shops, or enjoy the weather perfect for water sports fans; sailing, kayaking, water-skiing, diving and windsurfing. The beautiful beach at Whale Cove (Anse Baleine) is only accessible on foot along a stony path and is a peaceful and relaxing haven. Finally, visit the Church of St. Stephen, one of the oldest in Martinique. Dating from the 18th century and a listed Historical Monument with a Jesuit-style facade made of masonry stone, it is remarkable for its bell tower, separate from the main body of the structure.

Les Anses-d’Arlet

Cruise to the village of Anse d’Arlet on the southwest coast for snorkelling along the rocky shoreline. Enjoy the possible sighting of green sea turtles that can often be spotted in the grassy areas off the beach, or visit the beach of Anse Dufour, with white sand and the bottom of the bay that is rocky on both sides. Finally, take a short walk down the road to Anse Noire beach for more wildlife and snorkelling opportunities.

St. Pierre

Founded in 1635, St. Pierre is rich in historical sights. Visit the former centre of economy in Martinique before it was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Pelée in 1902. Visit the Frank Perret museum of volcanology to learn more. It was designated as a “City of Art and History” in 1990 to preserve and promote French culture. Finally, take a tour of the town’s ruins, and see the street of Rue Monte-au-Ciel with its picturesque original steps or the Cyparis dungeon, famous for sheltering one of the catastrophe’s two survivors in 1902.
