Vaxholm
Vaxholm is the “capital” of the archipelago and is considered to be its gateway, beginning at the harbour at Norrhamnen. History buffs love Vaxholm, as this island offers several museums and galleries which speak to the region’s seafarer past. Visit the 16th-century Vaxholm Fortress that has protected the approach to Stockholm for centuries, or wander around the old town of ‘turn-of-the-last-century’ pastel-coloured houses.
Hop over to nearby Bogesund Island, which has nature trails and the turreted 17th-century Bogesund Castle. Enjoy the numerous charming restaurants, cafés, and shops. More adventurous travelers have a range of exciting activities to choose from, like stand-up paddle-boarding, kayaking or fishing.
Sandhamn/Bullerö
A famous sailing spot in Sweden, founded before 1280. Take in the small picturesque island on Sandhamn in the Stockholm archipelago. Home to the Royal Swedish Yacht Club and is the perfect sailors town. The central area of the town is a mixture of traditional log houses and summer villas from the start of the 20th century. Visit Trouville Beach, sit on the rocks and enjoy the views and the water.
Explore the sheltered archipelago of Bullerö and visit artist Bruno Liljefors old hunting house on the main island of Bullerön. Find an untouched but well-maintained archipelago community in a beautiful and barren landscape. Wander the Bullerö Nature Reserve, and marvel at the flora of forests, lichen beaches and meadows.
