6 “must visit” places to anchor in the Southern Caribbean

Here are our top-secret favourite spots in the Caribbean, providing the best sailing whilst avoiding the crowds.

By Mark, 29 May 19

The Caribbean is home to some of the world’s most stunning yacht cruising locations. However, most sailors tend to venture to the well-explored parts of the region at the Northern end of the island chain. So, we asked the captain of S/V Vendia, Dr Mark Wibberley, where his favourite spots in the Southern Caribbean were. So, let’s dive right in and take a look…

6: Tyrell Bay Carriacou

Peaceful, protected, and friendly, Tyrell Bay, in Grenada, takes the sixth spot. It is a natural, protected mooring, which will be the first port of entry for cruises coming from the north. The white-sand horseshoe beach here is picture-perfect, offering plenty of amazing snorkelling and diving opportunities. There is also a welcoming beach bar/restaurant as well.

5. Bequia

Lovely vibes, beautiful anchorages, and good food shopping… Bequia does not disappoint! This is the second biggest island in the Grenadines, coming in at seven square miles. It has become quite a popular spot with tourists, with the busiest time of the year being the Regatta and Music Fest, which takes place every Easter. However, you’re going to have a special time no matter when you visit Bequia. With 28 identified dive sites, it is a great place for seeing many kinds of fish, as well as moray eels, lobsters, and Hawksbill turtles.

4. Anse Mitan, Martinique

One reason why Mark likes Anse Mitan so much is because it promises an easy clearance. However, there is a lot more to this part of the Caribbean than that! Boasting a French chic vibe, it has a luxurious feel to it. The golden beaches provide the perfect setting for some relaxation. Ashore you will find lots of great attractions, such as La Savan des Esclaves and Musee de la Pagerie as well as plenty of tasty restaurants boosting both traditional Caribbean and French cuisine.

3. La Désirade, off Guadeloupe

Described as a Caribbean secret, La Désirade off Guadeloupe is small, off the beaten track, and very friendly. Unspoiled beaches, stunning reefs and sleepy little towns ashore give this uncrowded island a unique charm that you won’t find elsewhere.

2.Tobago Cays

Tobago Cays is a stunning location, offering quietness in the middle of the Atlantic. This archipelago – situated in the Southern Grenadines of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines – is so special that Mark couldn’t pick just one spot to visit. This group of five small islands and extensive coral reefs are the places to go snorkelling with turtles.

1. Îles des Saintes, Guadeloupe

Taking the top spot is Îles des Saintes. This is formed by nine unspoiled islands – yet only two of them are inhabited. You can expect some of the most majestic views in the South Caribbean here. A lot of people also believe that it has one of the nicest bays in the world, a Lilliputian Rio de Janeiro. However, it’s not just about the luxury and the beauty, as the island have a rich maritime history. A walk ashore to some of the many ruined forts and museums is a must – just double-check opening times before you set off on your trek!
