The ARC is a ‘must do’ for many sailors, and attracts over 200 boats and 1200 people every year to sail 2700 NM across the Atlantic from Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia. The event attracts a wide range of entrants who cross the Atlantic together, but have their adventures.
Joining in Las Palmas you will spend a few days ahead of the race, based ashore, whilst you prepare the yacht for this transatlantic event. The ARC organisers offer several informative seminars ranging from provisioning to weather routing and safety demonstrations as well as several social events.
More than just a yacht race, the ARC is about friendships made ashore during pre-departure activities which are continued over the radio net at sea. It’s about arriving in Saint Lucia to be met on the dock with a rum punch and a chilled beer, knowing you have achieved something fantastic - crossing an ocean under sail.

A comprehensive pre-race program is provided in the Canaries to ensure a cohesive and well-prepared crew. This includes onshore seminars (hosted by the ARC organizers, World Cruising), marina-based training, and practical on-the-water training focusing on safety, sail handling, spinnaker use, and downwind sailing techniques. All crew will also be involved in provisioning, stowage planning, and social events.
Sailing across the Atlantic on any yacht is no small feat, but you’ll be surprised to learn that it’s not all about having lots of sailing experience. Mental strength often outweighs offshore experience and physical fitness. Life on board yachts can be busy, so all crew must be prepared to share living space and running chores with all other crew. When times get hard, everyone has to pull together to help finish the race, so a real team effort is required.
Physically, we require that all crew members have a good basic fitness level. The beauty of racing yachts is that to race efficiently; you need a broad church of skills and physical ability on board, so if some jobs leave you physically struggling, there will be other roles that you excel in.
Arguably, sailing ability is lowest on the priority list. As all safety training and race coaching is provided in the lead-up to the start, we ask that you have previously sailed some offshore and overnight passages.
If you have any questions about your suitability for this event, please contact the Kraken team.
Tick crossing the Atlantic Ocean off of your bucket list by joining our crew on the ARC. The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers follows a route of approximately 2700 nautical miles from the Canary Islands to St.Lucia in the Caribbean in a journey of true adventure that few people do in their lifetime!
This epic rally takes advantage of the trade winds, making for a faster and more enjoyable crossing for cruising yachts. As a formal rally, boats can take advantage of a structured framework for making a transatlantic crossing, including safety checks, routing advice, and daily communication schedules.
Book your berth and discover why many sailors value the chance to experience life at sea for an extended period. Highlights will include not only the sailing but also the wildlife and raw nature encountered at sea. Often dolphins will accompany the yacht and shooting stars will guide your passage.
