How to win the Round the Island Race

Win the UK’s most popular yacht race – with a novice crew!

By Mike

With nearly 17,000 sailors taking part in this one-day race, the Round the Island Race is believed to be the fourth largest participation sporting event in the UK – after the London Marathon and the Great North and South Runs. Therefore, getting on that podium can be a little bit tricky.

In this downloadable tactical guide for the 2022 race, professional tactician, Mike Pickering explains how he’s managed to bag the top spot on several occasions with novice crews.

“You should always expect the pre-start to be chaotic. With a novice crew, they’ll be unsure as to what is going on whilst potential carnage that breaks out around you.”
