HOW MUCH SAILING EXPERIENCE DO I NEED TO JOIN THIS ADVENTURE?

Sailing across the Atlantic on any yacht is no small feat, but you’ll be surprised to learn that it’s not all about having lots of sailing experience. Mental strength often outweighs offshore experience and physical fitness. Life on board yachts can be busy, so all crew must be prepared to share living space and running chores with all other crew. When times get hard, everyone has to pull together to help finish the race, so a real team effort is required.

Physically, we require that all crew members have a good basic fitness level. The beauty of racing yachts is that to race efficiently; you need a broad church of skills and physical ability on board, so if some jobs leave you physically struggling, there will be other roles that you excel in.

Arguably, sailing ability is lowest on the priority list. As all safety training and race coaching is provided in the lead-up to the start, we ask that you have previously sailed some offshore and overnight passages.

VOLVO 70 E1

The Volvo 70 Class yacht E1, previously known as ERICSSON 1, is a true legend of ocean racing. Constructed to compete in the 2005/06 Volvo Ocean Race with Neal McDonald as skipper for the Ericsson Racing Team, she has since changed name to “E1” and undergone extensive refits, enhancing its capabilities for racing by both professional and amateur crews.

Renowned for her speed and efficiency, especially in downwind conditions, E1 is well-suited for races like the ARC and the Rolex Middle Sea Race. This was most evident when E1 finished 2nd in Line Honours at the Rolex Middle Sea Race, missing the top spot by just 2-mins, one of the closest finishes in the race’s history.

Based in Vigo, Spain, E1 is an ideal vessel for transatlantic crossings and for accessing Northern European and Mediterranean waters. This yacht represents a combination of technical innovation and competitive spirit, ideal for those passionate about sailing and racing.

Sailing on the Volvo 70 E1, presents a unique opportunity for sailors looking to have a real shot at taking Line Honours in the ARC. This event (and racing a VO70) is on many people’s bucket-lists, offering extended time at sea and encounters with nature, like dolphins and shooting stars.

We provide a comprehensive pre-race programme in the Canaries to ensure a cohesive and well-prepared crew. This includes onshore seminars (hosted by the ARC organisers, World Cruising), marina-based training, and practical on-the-water training focusing on safety, sail handling, spinnaker use, and downwind sailing techniques. All crew will also be involved in provisioning, stowage planning, and social events.
